RELA INSTITUTE & MEDICAL CENTRE, AN INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL FACILITY · Hysterectomy · Kidney-Pancreas Transplantation · Laser Prostatectomy (Holep/Thulep) • HYSTERECTOMY Hysterectomy is a procedure in which the woman’s uterus is surgically removed. You may need a hysterectomy for various medical conditions. Your surgeon may suggest a hysterectomy if you have complaints of excessive vaginal bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, cancer of the cervix, uterus, or ovaries. Hysterectomy is also indicated if you have fibroids, a type of lump in the uterus that is noncancerous, or pelvic inflammatory disease, a serious infection of the reproductive organs. Your doctor might also suggest hysterectomy if you have uterine prolapse, a condition in which the uterus may be seen protruding out of the vagina after dropping down through the cervix. It may also be suggested due to endometriosis, a disorder characterized by intense pain as the lining inside the uterus starts to grow outside the organ. At Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre, an International Medical facility, hysterectomy is performed by a highly experienced surgeon, who may perform in various ways. The three forms of hysterectomy include Partial Hysterectomy, Total Hysterectomy, and Salpingo-Oophorectomy. A partial hysterectomy is when only a portion of the uterus is removed. A total hysterectomy is when your entire uterus is removed. Hysterectomy and Salpingo-Oophorectomy are when your uterus is removed along with one or both ovaries and fallopian tubes. Moreover, the procedure is also classified according to the location inside the body. In an abdominal hysterectomy, your surgeon will take out your uterus through a cut in your belly. In a vaginal hysterectomy, your uterus is removed from a small incision that is made inside your vagina. In a laparoscopic hysterectomy, your doctor uses a tiny thin tube-like instrument called a laparoscope with a high-resolution camera at the front. The instrument is introduced through small incisions that are made in the abdomen. Once the surgeon can visualize the uterus, it is removed by cutting it into small pieces and removing the pieces one at a time. After your surgery, you will be advised to stay in the hospital for 3 to 4 days so that the doctor can monitor your condition. • KIDNEY-PANCREAS TRANSPLANTATION Combined kidney-pancreas transplantation is performed for those patients who have kidney failure secondary to insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. After this surgery, the transplanted pancreas will produce insulin that will help control glucose levels in patients with diabetes. In comparison, the transplanted kidney will help in filtering waste and excrete it from the body, which in turn prevents the need for dialysis. At Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre, an International Medical facility, your doctor and transplant surgeon can determine in the first few appointments if the double transplant is indicated for you. They ask you questions related to your medical condition, your overall health and do a pre-transplant evaluation. This pre-transplant evaluation consists of a complete physical examination and consultations with the transplant surgeon and coordinator. A series of tests will be conducted, including ECG, ECHO, and tests for kidney function. Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre, an International Medical facility, makes sure that all donors are carefully screened for any transmissible diseases to prevent transmission of these diseases or other complications. This surgery can take approximately 5 to 7 hours, after which the patient stays in the hospital for about 8 to 12 days. Once the patient is stable enough, they can be discharged. • LASER PROSTATECTOMY (HOLEP/THULEP) Laser prostatectomy surgery is performed to relieve moderate to severe urinary symptoms that are caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition in which the prostate enlarges. There are two types of laser prostatectomies performed at Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre, an International Medical facility, holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) and Thulium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (ThuLEP). Both these procedures use a laser to remove tissue that is blocking the flow of urine through the prostate. These procedures are similar to open prostate surgery but require no incisions. They can remove the entire portion of the prostate that is blocking the urine flow and provide a lasting solution for the enlarged prostate. One of the major differences between ThuLEP and HoLEP is that both the procedures use different types of laser; the former uses thulium while the latter uses Holmium. The way they are given is also different. Holmium lasers are given in pulses, whereas thulium lasers are given continuously. Another difference is that these lasers are absorbed by different substances in the body as they have different wavelengths. Holmium lasers are mostly absorbed by hemoglobin, whereas thulium lasers are mainly absorbed in the water.
